Every post goes on a footing set below the frost line. A deck on shallow footings heaves in the first hard winter, and once it moves, every board and railing above it is out of square permanently.

Almost always, yes — most Front Range municipalities require a permit for a deck above a certain height, and attached decks bring structural and egress requirements with them. We handle the permit process, and we build to code rather than around it.
Wood costs less up front and can be refinished, but it needs staining every few years and our sun is hard on it. Composite costs more initially and never needs staining, though it runs hotter underfoot in direct sun. On a south-facing deck that gets full afternoon exposure, that heat difference is worth thinking about.
It depends entirely on how it's built. An open slat pergola gives dappled shade that moves through the day. If you want reliable shade you want tighter slat spacing, louvres you can adjust, or a solid or polycarbonate roof. We'll ask which hours of the day you actually sit out there before designing it.
A properly engineered one can. Snow load is a real design input here, not a footnote — especially up on the Palmer Divide and in the foothills, where a structure sized for a milder climate will fail. Post size, beam spans and footings all get specified for it.
Yes to both. Hot tubs need their own reinforced framing because of the weight — a full tub is far heavier than people assume. Building around a tree is doable with room left for growth and movement, though we'll be honest if the species or position makes it a bad idea.
